A GOUROCK golfer has landed a dream job in the Qatari capital of Doha.
Blair Harvey is the new professional at the city’s only golf club and is helping to spearhead the development of the game in the Arab country.
The 23-year-old former Tele columnist teed up the glamorous job three months ago and is loving life on the Persian Gulf.
Blair, who started playing at Gourock Golf Club at the age of 11, is the new Doha professional but also has a commercial role at the club.
Despite a massive change in culture – and weather – the young player is relishing such a rare opportunity.
Blair told the Tele: “To say Doha is hot is an understatement! It took a little getting used to but I’ve settled in well as there’s a strong British community in and outside the club.
“I’ve been a pro for just over three years now and only just finished my training shortly before I came to Doha. It’s uncommon to be lucky enough to find yourself in this position so soon after finishing.
“Gourock will always be home to me, but when you want to build a career you need to look to the places that hold the most opportunity – and at my age and position in life, it’s definitely out here.
“I love it here and  it’s much better than expected. You have to dive in and embrace the culture.”
The ambitious Gourock golfer, who met Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie at an event earlier this year, below, is part of a project to boost the profile of the sport in Qatar.
Blair said: “The offer came around just days after passing my final practical exams for the Professional Golf Association.
“I noticed the position and put myself forward.
“Things are done much differently from in the UK, which at times can be a huge challenge, but it means I face new obstacles every day to over come to run a successful business.
“I’m able to go from teaching to running an event to custom fitting people, running a professional shop and getting to play golf every day.
“I had a group of folk back at my home course in Gourock who always pushed me to make the most of my golf career and really can’t thank them enough – especially the head professional, Derek Watters, who took my golf under his wing from a young age.
“I was also lucky enough to have the support of two great sponsors, Andrew Meek of AGM and Rolan Spella of HOT, who both played a huge part in getting myself into position to land this opportunity.”
