TWO public fundraisers have been launched to help families left homeless by a devastating Inverkip blaze.

An inferno ripped through adjacent detached properties on Findhorn Crescent and gutted the homes owned by the Smith and Devine families.

Over £2,000 has been raised so far between the appeals, set up by friends and relatives of those affected.

Caroline Smith, whose home was destroyed in the fire, has praised the community for the display of kindness.

She said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our neighbours in Findhorn Crescent and neighbouring streets. In fact, I would like to thank everyone within the Inverkip community and those further afield who have shown us the greatest of support, kindness, generosity and love on the night of and days following the recent house fires.

"We cannot put into words what these people have done for us and just what it means to everyone. It's been truly overwhelming and has been very much appreciated by us all."

The second fundraiser, which is in aid of the Devine family, was set up by Hugh Reynolds, sister of homeowner Sandra. Their property was also completely destroyed by the devastating blaze.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have yet to confirm the cause of the fire - however Hugh has said on the fundraising appeal page that it started in a garden shed.

He said he hoped locals would rally round to boost the appeal for a family who have devoted time to helping others.

Hugh added: "My sister Sandra is one of the kindest people I know, spending most of her life raising money for charity, whether it was for the church, her children's schools or other good causes.

"She would spend days and sometimes nights making cakes, tablet or pretty much anything else that would help make money for others."

After the blaze on May 16, surrounding homes were evacuated and Inverclyde Health and Social Care partnership staff opened the Inverkip Hub to accommodate residents whilst emergency services battled the flames.

The site has since been flattened to make it safe.
