A DRUNKEN wedding reveller who wandered into the restricted grounds of Greenock police office before being arrested has been fined - after a sheriff told him 'this was not your finest hour'.

David Fender had had 'a little bit too much to drink', according to his lawyer, when he strayed into the backyard of the Rue End Street station and was spotted by suspicious staff.

Greenock Sheriff Court was told this week that the 36-year-old had been at a wedding reception at the adjacent OYO Gin House Hotel, next door to the building at Custom House Place, on July 16, 2022.

A prosecutor told Tuesday's hearing that Fender was placed into the back of a police vehicle shortly before midnight on the day of the offence and he 'presented in an aggressive demeanour' throughout a journey to Clydebank police office.

The fiscal depute said: "He was abusive towards police, repeatedly threatening to assault officers.

"Once within the custody area at Clydebank police office he became violent, causing him to be taken to the prone position and he refused to comply with custody procedures."

Fender, represented by solicitor Amy Spencer, had not guilty pleas accepted by the Crown to charges of cocaine possession, intention to commit theft and failing to provide his name and address to a PC without reasonable excuse.

Ms Spencer said her client had finished a night shift before going out to the party and was going through a break-up at the time.

She added: "He had a little bit too much to drink and he somehow found himself in the backyard of the police station.

"His behaviour was absolutely bizarre before he was placed in handcuffs then his behaviour changed.

"He has never done anything like this before and plans to never be in this position again."

Sheriff Clair McLachlan told him: "This was not your finest hour. Hopefully, this is a one-off."

Fender, of Castlehill Avenue in Port Glasgow, was fined £245, to be paid to the court within 28 days.
