A GREENOCK musician is celebrating after winning a Scottish championship title - with her sister placing second in the same event.
Andrea Crumlish, principal tenor horn of Riverside Youth Band, picked up the youth solo champion prize at the recent Scottish Solo and Ensemble Championships in Bellshill.
The 18-year-old, who is currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, competed against qualifiers from across the country, Andrea played Variations on a Scots Theme – a piece written especially for her by composer Alan Fernie.
She was in familiar company in her class at the championships, with sister Siobhan taking the runner-up spot.
Andrea said: “When it was announced that I had come first, I was quite surprised - in a good way - and it still hasn't quite hit me yet.
“Playing a piece Alan Fernie had written for me was a really exciting experience and I loved being able to share it with the audience of people across Scotland.
"As someone who takes part in as many contests as I can, these events have played a huge part in my development.
“Not only have I gained lots of great and helpful feedback on things I can improve on, but I also get to hear the things that people like about my playing."
RYB saw further success at the championships, with baritone player Stuart Smith receiving a silver award in the junior solos.
Cornet player Ash Paton picked up a gold award, as well as coming second in the intermediate solo competition.
Andrea and Ash also came third in the youth ensembles contest, alongside Riverside Youth Band quartet members Scott Crumlish and Katie Livingstone.
On the same day, bass trombonist Scott Smith was named a runner-up in the Inverclyde heat of the Scottish Young Musicians competition.
Musical director Mark Good said: "Many congratulations to Andrea for her success in the Scottish Solo Championships.
“Her hard work and dedication is paying off and I'm excited to see her continuing to progress.
“Well done to all those Riverside Youth Band members practising hard and representing themselves, their families and Inverclyde with pride."
