A TEENAGER who smashed mirrors in his girlfriend's flat during a booze-fuelled rage has been told by a sheriff that he 'ought to have known better'.

Callum O'Hagen, 19, vandalised the young woman's property following an argument about ex-partners, a court hearing was told.

The first offender left broken glass strewn across the floor of the Greenock property and injured himself in the process of lashing out.

O'Hagen, who committed the offence on January 8, was slammed for his 'absolutely disgraceful behaviour' when he appeared for sentencing.

A prosecutor told the court that the young couple had been in a relationship for around five months and both went to the James Watt Wetherspoon pub on Cathcart Street on the night of the incident.

The procurator fiscal depute said: "The accused had consumed alcohol and became upset and irate and began to argue about previous relationships.

"The witness then returned to her flat and went to bed.

"Upon entering the locus the witness asked the accused to sleep off the alcohol, however, he refused and started shouting at her.

"He then punched a mirror in the bedroom which shattered and spread glass all over the floor.

"He had small cuts on his hand as a result."

O'Hagen made his way to the hallway and again refused to leave the address before he elbowed another mirror and caused it to smash.

The fiscal depute said: "Police attended and observed him stood outside with an injury to his hand.

"They also observed smashed mirrors within the property and they took statements from the witness.

"[O'Hagen] was arrested and responded saying 'We had a fight and I punched a mirror, I don't hit women'."

The complainer was said to have been 'fearful' of the teen's behaviour.

His solicitor, Paul Cook, told the hearing: "They were out drinking and that is not an excuse but an explanation. By his own admission things got out of hand.

"He is ashamed and embarrassed of the way he has behaved in this matter."

Sheriff James Varney told O'Hagen, of Marloch Avenue in the Port: "It must have been an absolute delight to have been in the house with you that night.

"You are 19-years-old and ought to have known better.

"The report suggests it may have been isolated and I really hope we don't see you before the court again."

A three-month non-harassment order was imposed along with 40 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.
