ROAD closures are in place in Greenock as controversial improvement works in the town centre continue.

A section of West Blackhall Street is closed between its junctions with Argyle Street and Jamaica Street.

Argyle Street is also off limits from its junction with West Blackhall Street to West Stewart Street.

The closures are in place to allow for construction activities associated with the West Blackhall Street streetscape improvements.

Greenock Telegraph:

Traffic is being diverted via Dalrymple Street, Westburn Street and Nicolson Street.

The roads are expected to remain closed until 5pm on May 9.

A separate section of West Blackhall Street, between Westburn Street and Nicolson Street, recently reopened following the first phase of works.

The £3.2m – which was launched in January – is designed to ‘future proof’ the area by making it compatible with more sustainable forms of transport.

However, the ongoing works, which are expected to last until autumn have been met with anger from traders who say they have seen a dramatic drop in footfall and custom.

The Telegraph told last week how one shop owner, Hassia Chalmers of the Sovereign bespoke jewellery shop, reported taking just £20 in a single day.

Other traders have organised a petition calling for a cut in business rates while the work continues.
