A COMPASSIONATE group of Inverclyde women have raised their voices to generate an incredible £18,000 for two much-loved organisations.

The Hospice Singers started out in 2006 and in the almost 20 years that have followed, they have dedicated every one of their performances to charity.

All money raised from their concerts is split evenly between Ardgowan Hospice and St Mary's Church in Greenock, which is where they rehearse every Wednesday.

The super singers are conducted by choir leader Maureen Harrison and Michael Hepburn is their accompanist.

Guitarist and singer Liz Irvine is one of the founder members of the group.

She said the ladies are thrilled to have raised such a huge amount of money of the years.

Liz added: "We've raised this amount thanks to the support of people across Inverclyde and beyond.

"We couldn't do this without the support we receive.

"It's lovely knowing that we mean so much to the community."

Greenock Telegraph:
The Hospice Singers evolved in response to a need for a fundraising carol concert.

Liz said: "The Friends of Ardgowan Hospice and Stedfast Silver Band used to have a carol concert every year to raise money for the hospice.

"The team at the hospice decided it would be nice to have staff from the hospice involved in something to help raise funds as well.

"We started our own choir with members of staff and volunteers and it just grew from there."

In the years that followed, the choir opened up to the public and now has 32 members.

Liz added: "We needed more voices so we welcomed more people in.

"We've gone from strength to strength over the years."

The performers are invited to sing at events all over Inverclyde and beyond, and also host their own concerts two or three times a year.

All of the money raised on concert nights is split between Ardgowan Hospice and St Mary's Church.

Liz said the ladies sing a 'very eclectic' mix of tunes, from Neil Sedaka and John Denver, to hymns, and all of the ladies are very proud to be part of The Hospice Singers.

Liz added: "The music is so uplifting and there's great camaraderie between us all.

"It's fantastic to be part of such a great team and to be raising money for two amazing causes."
