Work to replace Greenock Town Hall's roof is underway

Passers-by looked on as a giant crane lifted massive aluminium structures up to the top of the iconic Inverclyde landmark.

The work is part of a £2 million project to protect and preserve the historic 19th century building for many more decades to come.

Tele photographer George Munro caught all the action as the impressive construction work got underway.

The Wallace Place car park has been closed for three days to allow the crane to be put in place.  

When the project was announced, environment and regeneration convenor, Councillor Michael McCormick, said: “Greenock Town Hall and the Municipal Buildings are some of the finest examples of neoclassical-Italianate architecture in the country and have been admired by people from near and far for around 140 years.

“As with any institution, we are only the custodians and have a duty to protect and preserve these historic buildings for future generations to admire and enjoy.”

The Town Hall dates back to 1858 and the Municipal Buildings were constructed around the venue as the population of Greenock and Inverclyde grew significantly in the mid to late 1800s.

The contractor apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused but the restrictions are required to ensure the works are carried out safely.
